8 “Out-of-the-Box” Date Ideas

January 31, 2017

Who doesn’t love going on a date with our loved one? Who doesn’t enjoy feeling that rush inside when we can take time, disconnect from the hustle and bustle of everyday life, and truly dedicate time to our partner?

With the busyness of modern day life and limited time available we have learned to cherish every moment, whether it’s a romantic dinner at our favorite restaurant or a night out to the movie theater, but at the same time these are the same things that tend to become part of a monotonous and repetitive routine, sometimes without us even realizing it. Let us show you some new date ideas to keep things fresh in the relationship.

1. Stargazing

How many times do we stop and look up at the night sky? How often do we even think about doing it? Not often, right?

Those who have randomly caught themselves just staring up at a star-blanketed sky can admit that it is a thing of beauty, a thing of beauty that is far too often unnoticed.

If you’re a city slicker and haven’t seen the majestic beauty of a clear night sky, then you don’t know what you’re missing. Grab a blanket and head out to a place with a clear view. You might have to do a little driving, but a clear night sky sets the stage for a romantic date like no other.

Download the Night Sky app so you actually know what you’re looking at and see how many constellations you can identify. You don’t have to have a $5,000 telescope to enjoy the view. Who knows? You might even see a shooting star!

2. Go for a bike ride

If you have an old bike sitting in the garage that has been touched for years it’s time to get it out, inflate those tires, and grease up those chains. You don’t even necessarily need two bikes. Rent a bicycle for two so you can pedal together!

Going for a bike ride is an easy way to enjoy the outdoors, intimately connect without any distractions or disturbances of any mobile devices, and even get some light exercise together while enjoying the outdoors and genuine conversation.

It doesn’t even have to be the only activity either. You can implement other things like having a picnic, a walk off the beaten path or simply stopping for awhile and admiring the beauty of nature. Even the busiest of couples can make some time for a quick bike ride around the block or even to the local park and back. Don’t forget to wear a helmet. Safety first!

3. Try Hiking

Sometimes doing different things, discovering new places, and doing out-of-the-box activities together can help us grow closer to our partner and develop an even healthier relationship.

Similar to a bike ride, a hike it’s a great way to get out and admire nature, get some exercise, unwind, and disconnect from the daily grind. You don’t necessarily have to be a pro mountain climber or a frequent backpacker. If you’re going on a long hike you can even pack a lunch and have a romantic picnic halfway, just make sure you pick a spot with a scenic view.

Whether you decide to go on a short hike with flat terrain or you’re feeling adventurous enough to conquer hilly mountain trails, the marvels of nature have an inexplicable way of relaxing us and offer a perfect setting for us to connect to our partner in an even deeper way.

Be sure to take the necessary things like sunscreen, insect repellent, water, and a good pair of boots so you don’t end the day with a bunch of bug bites and blisters. Oh, and don’t forget a positive attitude!

4. Check out a drive-in movie theater

Yeah, maybe you haven’t even heard of them. Maybe they’re only something that you have seen in the movies. The truth is, there aren’t that many left, but at the same time that is exactly what makes this date idea so romantic.

There is a good chance you will have to drive quite a distance to get to one, so why not make it a road trip in the meantime? Anyway, these days normal movie ticket prices are skyrocketing and jam-packed theaters can get pretty old, so doing something like hitting up a drive-in movie theater is a fresh and highly recommended alternative.

Usually there’s not much of a variety on the billboard, but let’s be honest, when we’re alone with our couple in the car late at night, who cares what movie they’re showing?

5. Take a road trip!

You don’t even have to have a destination or even plan ahead for this one. Just get in the car and go!

Whether you’re in an old, beat-up Ford pickup or a 2016 Camaro, the idea of a random road trip is adventurous, fun, spontaneous, and even romantic.

What makes this idea so special is that you can easily implement so many other things like a hike, a picnic, or even stargazing on a clear night out in the peaceful countryside.

Although it the randomness of this plan can make it a more fun and exhilarating experience, it can be even more enjoyable if properly planned because sometimes the destination and the stops along the way are just as important as the journey itself, especially if you pick one that has a special meaning for both of you!

So fill up the gas tank, get out your road atlas and carefully plan out the trip together. Don’t forget to roll down those windows, crank up the music, and enjoy the ride!

6. Cook dinner together

Going out to our favorite restaurant with our loved ones is always a great plan, especially if both happen to love the same kind of food, but unfortunately this outing has become too much of a repetitive routine when it comes to date nights. When we go out to eat we can look around and see couples all over the place completely oblivious with their eyes glued to the screens of their mobile devices, people two feet away from each other that sometimes don’t even make eye contact.

Ditching our cell phones, finding a recipe that both like and cooking dinner (or any meal) ourselves is an easy way to connect with our partner and take on a challenge as a team.

No long waits and no messed up orders, just a lot of fun and maybe a food fight or two.

Even the simplest and most basic recipes can end up making for a great time together, you don’t necessarily have to be an expert in culinary arts.

It doesn’t even have to be a full course meal. Sticking to an entrée or a simple dessert recipe if you have a sweet tooth will work as well. In the end, we all want to the food to taste delicious and be able to brag to others later about how good it turned out, but the truth is that the final result doesn’t really matter.

What really matters is the quality time spent together that is enriching to any relationship.

Who knows? You might even discover your hidden talent.

7. Go-kart racing

If you’re both looking for a new and exhilarating experience outside the box, then hitting up the nearest go-kart circuit is a great way to have a good time and get the adrenaline pumping. The truth is, this activity isn’t just for kids, adults can enjoy it as well. After all, every relationship needs a little healthy competition in the mix.

Maybe you’re not a big fan of motorsports or a master behind the wheel, but every couple needs to connect with their competitive side at least once in awhile, and we’re not exactly talking about a game of cards.

Whether you win, lose, or end up spinning each other off the track in a dash to the finish line, the thrill of go-kart racing brings out the little kid in us that helps us let go and enjoy the fleeting moment as if we were five-year-olds in a toy store.

Skip the traditional dinner and a movie and go for a spin on the asphalt, no matter how much skill you bring to the table, or lack thereof.

8. Go skiing

No more “netflix and chill.” That’s for amateurs. Time to leave all those boring, run-of-the-mill-type date ideas behind and hit up the slopes.

You don’t necessarily have to have a foot of snow on the ground either! Of course natural snow is always better, but most ski resorts these days make their own artificial snow, so you don’t have to wait for next winter storm.

Maybe you’re more of a snowboarder, or you have never practiced any winter sports in your life, but the good news is that most ski lodges have basic lessons so by the end of the day you can be carving up the most intimidating slopes like a pro.

If you do happen to have some practice under you belt and your partner has no clue, then it’s the perfect opportunity to teach them. You don’t even have to spend hundreds of dollars on equipment either.  If you’re not a frequent skier you can rent whatever you need at the ski lodge.

Those long trips back up the mountain on the ski lift can get cold and boring, but it’s also the perfect excuse for a little extra cuddling on a chilly winter day.
